January 19, 2026 newsletter

Good morning everyone!  Martin Luther King Jr has been a great source of inspiration for me in my work over many decades.  If I've calculated properly, I was in 3rd grade when he was murdered, and I remember telling my mother that the news man said that some king had been shot.  She knew immediately whom they were talking about, and it caused no small amount of distress in my family.  It wasn't until years later that I better understood his work and his impact on society.  I hope you have also been inspired by his life and legacy, and if you want to learn more, I can't recommend anything better than his "Letters from a Birmingham Jail."

We want to remind you all one last time, that this coming Saturday, January 24, is our Partners, Participants, and Allies Meeting at 1:00pm at Shepherd of the Valley Church.  Everyone is welcome to come and see what's going on and help us chart a course for the future.  Even if you haven't volunteered or donated, if you care about our community, that's all we need!  Please come.

We had a very exciting weekend, as we welcomed some new volunteers.  Our pantry service was on the lighter side, no doubt due in part to the snow, so it was a good opportunity to explain how we work and for everyone to get to know each other.  One of our friends has a question for all of you that she brought up in the course of the morning.  She has a tricycle for a small child that needs a good home!  She is estimating that it's a good size for a 3 or 4 year old.  Do any of you know someone who would like to have it?  If so, just email me back and I'll put you in touch with her.

One Small Thing

Our friend Margaret brought a beautiful selection of scarves that her mother made!  It only took two weeks for all of them to be claimed.  Such a lovely gift for our guests, and we thank her for it.

If you can shop for us this week, we are low on small jars of jelly and baked beans.  What a combination, huh?  We can take drop-offs at the pantry (through the gray door next to the parking lot on Cambridge Street) on Wednesdays from 10 to noon, Fridays from 4 to 5, and Saturdays only from 9 to 10.  Please do not leave food at the door outside of these hours.  The bin is always available at Shop n' Save if those times don't suit: Please leave a note in the bag with your name so we know whom to thank!  We are located at 21 Washington Street, Suite C, Ayer MA 01432

On this MLK Jr Day, remember that joy is an act of resistance.  I know it can be hard, but please go and be joyful!
