Opioids and other poisons

No one wakes up one morning and decides to become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Some people do a "young and stupid" thing and find themselves in a world of hurt. Others become addicted when their doctor prescribes them perfectly legal pain killers. Still others live in a world of mental or emotional suffering, and they are looking for a way to escape that pain for a while. However it happens, addition is a disease, not a character flaw.  ***** From NIH website: Opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH): This condition is characterized by a paradoxical response whereby a patient receiving opioids for the treatment of pain could actually become more sensitive to certain painful stimuli. ***** You can see how this could quickly lead to a patient asking for higher doses, followed by increased resistance, and even more pain.  We have no idea what someone else's lived experience is. Please let's not forget that, or ever refer to them as "Those people".  Image: Canva
The intrepid crew from the Ayer office of National Grid came to help out today. We *never* get things delivered, sorted, packed, and put away as fast as we did today! Thank you gang Mich H, Ben L, Jim M, and Olivia P

Thank you Lyna!

Haircuts by Lyna T You helped us to feel less shaggy going into the (finally!) warmer weather  💕

In search of great recipes!

We give out bags of “pantry staples” each week along with our fresh foods. Now we are looking for some very specific volunteers: people who would like to work on developing some recipes for the pantry using those staples in tasty meals, rather than just eating stuff heated up straight from the can.  If food is your jam, comment here with your contact info (it will not be posted) and we'll talk so that you know what exactly is in each of our bags. We would LOVE to be able to hand out recipes for “Bill's potato surprise” and “Kelly's rice and bean delight”! Here's the first installment, which our friend Mich H put together 💕

Craft packets from the Ayer Library!

Thank you to the Ayer Library for the craft packets you've been sharing with us this summer! We make them available to families that visit our pantry, along with a selection of free books from the Friends of the Ayer Library (thank you Laurie S!), and information on the Library's resources and Storytimes 💕

June Craft Gathering!

On Saturday June 10, Debbie E and Melanie P had people coloring, painting, doing scratch art, and making silk flowers. It was a wonderful morning of crafting with company.  If you don't want to miss out on the next CG, put Saturday July 8 on your calendar now. I should also point out that the room where the Gathering meets is air conditioned when needed :-) Our special thanks to Randi from The World in Stitches (in Littleton), who gave Debbie some craft kits that we could hand out! We still have a couple left, and they will be available at the next pantry session.

Craft Gathering this Saturday!

Many thanks to our fearless leaders Debbie E and Melanie P 💕 All materials and tools are supplied for our Gatherings, or you are also welcome to bring your own project to work on at this family friendly event.  There is never a fee to be a part of our programs! Stone Soup Kitchen, 41 Littleton Rd, Ayer MA.         Saturday June 10, 2023 from 10 to noon

Dental health is important for overall health!

We had a great visit from our very own Tooth Fairy, Miss Lorren!  She came and shared about the importance of dental health and answered all of our questions.  Many thanks to the office of Dr Kevin Brown, DMD & Associates for lending Lorren to us for the afternoon!
