Good morning friends, When I was a child, I thought of Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day as being sort of the same thing. Obviously, they're not, and I now know better, but it doesn't stop me from thinking about and thanking those who are on active duty and those who are veterans. But mostly I do think about, and am grateful to, those who sacrificed themselves for all of us. If there is a member of your family that didn't come home, I am very sorry for the loss you have suffered for the sake of all of us. I have some updates for you this week: Thank you to everyone involved in the donation and transportation of baby food and other items to the Ayer Shelter. They were received with great joy! Thank you for the loan of a replacement microwave for Friday dinners! Thank you to the contacts who work for and who told me about grants that I could write to National Grid, the Clif Family Foundation, and the ELCA! We now have a contact for Bank of America so ...

"What the Food Stamp" Sees by Susan Scheid

What the Food Stamp Sees Honey, I know you’re hungry. You think I don’t hear your stomach growl, even from the depths of your bag? I see the way you look through the windows of the fancy restaurant, plates piled high with half-eaten meals you could only dream of. I know I don’t hold much promise-- a bag of rice, some milk, perhaps a fresh head of cabbage and some apples-- just enough to quiet the echoes that rumble through you. But who am I, a mere piece of paper, to tell you how you feel? The fear, the shame. I see it in your eyes and the way your spine collapses when you pull me out. I can only tell you what you already must know. That I am merely a band-aid when you deserve so much more. Susan Scheid is a poet and literary activist who lives in Washington, DC. Susan honed her craft while working for the last 30 years as a Legal Secretary. She was inspired by her father reading poems to her at bedtime and by stories of him reading poetry to his fellow wounded soldiers in medic...

May 20, 2024 newsletter

Well, May is just zipping by, isn't it? Don't forget to stop and smell those lilacs! We had an interesting week that included a networking event with many healthcare organizations in the region. We were invited by the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, and it was an extremely helpful opportunity to meet, and re-meet, some of the folks whom we can call upon for advice in adjacent areas of public health that aren't in our own wheelhouse. It was very timely too, as we ended up dealing with an incident at the Friday night dinner where we got to put into practice some of what we had learned. Thank you to Melanie and Lin for going with me and for sharing the load! I also wanted to give you an update on the medical van. Negotiations continue, and we're very pleased with how they're progressing. The discussions have been thoughtful, and we continue to carefully proceed with figuring out the right way to do this and the right place to put it. In the meantim...

A beautiful good morning to you all! Who managed to see the lights this weekend? Mike and I botched it, and it makes me really sad, but if that's all I have to complain about...well, you know! There were certainly plenty of other things that went right this past week, so I'm going to choose to concentrate on those instead  😊 Many thanks to those who responded to my request for info on the companies you work for that may have community grant programs. I was able to write one grant last week, thanks to one of these connections (I'm looking at you, MH!). Now a question for the rest of you: do any of you work at Bank of America, Walmart, or Whole Foods? Bank of America in particular has a grant program that I can apply for, but it has to be done very quickly as the deadline is coming up fast. I can do it without a point of contact, but it's so much better to have one! Will the rest of you who work for corporations please check to see if they have a grant progra...

Good morning all! I've been thinking a lot lately. That can be a dangerous pass-time when it's not directed properly, so I've been working hard to keep it on track :-) You probably all know the saying, “You don't know what you don't know.” It's not just that you don't know stuff, it's that you don't even know that there are whole categories of stuff that you're not aware of. One area that I do know I am challenged in is grants. I know how to write them (mostly), but I don't always know how to find them, especially corporate grants. The community foundations that cover our area (Greater Lowell Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts) have both been really helpful and supportive. We have also been supported by donations and volunteer hours by many fabulous local businesses, churches, and civic groups. I deeply appreciate all of these amazing organizations. What I don't know about, o...
